Former Irish professional tennis player, Chris Wilton, takes on a job as a tennis instructor at a prestigious club in London. He strikes up a friendship with his student, Tom Hewett, who introduces Chris to his wealthy British family. Chloe, Tom's sister, quickly falls for Chris. Despite being engaged to Chloe, Chris finds himself drawn to Tom's American fiancée, Nola Rice, and the two engage in a brief affair.

As Chris marries Chloe and rises within the Hewett family's company, Tom ends his relationship with Nola. However, Chris's obsession with Nola only grows, leading to her becoming his mistress. When Nola becomes pregnant and puts pressure on Chris, he must make a decision that will ultimately shape the course of his life.
